About Lylah M. Alphonse

I'm a journalist, editor, freelance writer, and blogger who appears regularly on WGBH's "Greater Boston," "Boston Public Radio," and "Beat the Press" news shows. I most recently worked as the Managing Editor for Government Rankings/News at U.S. News & World Report, where I coordinated daily news coverage of and special reports about major national issues, from politics and policy to the health care industry and higher education, and led a team of great journalists as they measured government performance at the global, state, and local levels.

Previously, I was a Senior Editor and Senior Writer at Yahoo.com, where I wrote daily for Yahoo! Shine and for Yahoo.com's front page about news, trends, health, parenting, pop culture, and more. (Click here to view my archive on Yahoo.) I launched and curated Yahoo!'s "Women in Politics" section in 2012, was part of Yahoo! News' election-night team, have interviewed First Lady Michelle Obama, Dr. Jill Biden, Valerie Jarrett and other notables on-camera and off, and have a proven track record of writing articles that grab readers and get them commenting.

From 1994 to 2010, I was an editor at The Boston Globe, where I also freelanced as a writer for several departments. I've written hard news stories (9/11 coverage from Europe, shuttle explosion from India), travel trend stories (group travel, destination pieces, packing tips), hard and soft features (schoolchildren and beer in Belgium, in-depth interviews with and profiles of local celebrities and up-and-coming innovators), restaurant reviews, home and office design features, book reviews, family-friendly features, and product reviews. I also wrote a regular parenting column for the paper and for Boston.com. Click here for clips.

When I'm not at the keyboard or solving a kid-related crisis -- I'm also a mom and stepmom to five kids, who range in age from college graduate to seventh grader -- I'm in the kitchen or, occasionally, asleep.
